The Pirate Bay - The galaxy's most resilient bittorrent site

We were down a few hours earlier today. There's no need to worry, we haven't been raided this time. We're only upgrading stuff since we're still growing.

One of the technical things we always optimize is where to put our front machines. They are the ones that re-direct your traffic to a secret location. We have now decided to try to build something extraordinary.

With the development of GPS controlled drones, far-reaching cheap radio equipment and tiny new computers like the Raspberry Pi, we're going to experiment with sending out some small drones that will float some kilometers up in the air. This way our machines will have to be shut down with aeroplanes in order to shut down the system. A real act of war.

We're just starting so we haven't figured everything out yet. But we can't limit ourselves to hosting things just on land anymore. These Low Orbit Server Stations (LOSS) are just the first attempt. With modern radio transmitters we can get over 100Mbps per node up to 50km away. For the proxy system we're building, that's more than enough.

But when time comes we will host in all parts of the galaxy, being true to our slogan of being the galaxy's most resilient system. And all of the parts we'll use to build that system on will be downloadable.

Fucking awesome. Even if there IS a better way of doing it on the ground, this is a GREAT way to embarrass the ones who are trying to shut you down.
An aeroplane or helicopter needed just to shut down a floating computer? They'd look like absolute spastics.

You (the audience) are either stupid or gullible. This will not happen anytime soon in a usable state. And, if it does, where do you think the non-wired drone communicates back to? Not only the directions but the actual shit found on here. The Internet is primarily a wired infrastructure. Some entity that is ground based will need to be tapped. So, how is this adding any benefit to the current situation? One does not need to disable the drone; rather, all that is needed is to disable the provider at ground. Looks like April came early.

The problem is still the same. You can be taken out by removing the frontend. The thing connecting all users with the backend servers with the content on. The weakest link is still the frontend.

Interesting idea, not original but still fun to try. Having thepiratebay in orbit would be cool and more importantly very annoying for the censorship assholes.

#48. diegodiego142 - 03-19 2012
Thank you TPB for your efforts.
#49. namshub - 03-19 2012
Great idea!

For all you people suggesting international waters - just as it's lawless for pirates, so is it lawless for governments.

How hard do you think it would be for a navy the size of the US's to locate the drones? Ever hear of HFDF? They located u-boats by quickly triangulating during the brief moments they were on the surface & transmitting. That was over 60 years ago & drones need to communicate constantly.

Dropping a pirate ship in international waters is trivially easy. Dropping a small, radar-deflecting pirate ship flying low over, say, China or Pakistan, is several orders of magnitude more difficult to accomplish without repercussions.
#50. namshub - 03-19 2012
Oh, by the way. We have tools like MAFIAAFIRE & Tor, that are just getting better & better. People in Iran & China can use the Internet however they want despite being blocked by their governments.

That link is not as weak as some here are saying.
#51. twxpda - 03-19 2012
How to use the unmanned airship?
Long endurance, low cost, and if you stay in the stratosphere and even when a small satellite.
#52. torrent02 - 03-19 2012
And that's why we all the Bay!! No matter how much people attempt to stop them, their crew is always on it, screwing governments over. Good idea. 100 Mbps is crazy! Another idea is to just boost your speed on your computer and the faster it gets. It's always nice to piss people off, especially governments.

Long live the Bay!

#55. meject - 03-19 2012
If you guys really want to try something like this to make it harder to shut you down why dont you forget flying drones and just use the raspberry pi to run a small satellite?

Sure w/e orbit you may get out of such a satellite would be really shitty, but you could compensate for that with a small swarm of them. It's also not like the US is going to try and destroy the satellites in that system, the whole thing could be rebuilt hundereds of times with just the cost of one anti satellite missile...

I was also laughing really hard the first time i read the blog post

I was thinking about a similar project some time ago. I was trying to launch a webserver (with forum, etc.) on such an aerostat. That would, as I supposed, give the users the feeling of a pirate ship drifting in random direction across our globe. I dropped the idea because the worldwide satellite internet connection this aerostat would require, is slow and horribly expensive for me.

But I did some research on that, which I will try to share.

First and foremost, radio communications are not safe: sources can be easily triangulated if the signal can be detected. Therefore, the only sure way to prevent triangulation is to prevent signal detection. If I understood your goal right, you have ground station A, which is a front-end proxy, and Groung Station B, which location must remain secret because Station B connects to your servers directly. So, you try to connect two Stations not via direct radio communication (because station

TPB, great work staying out of the clutches of the US DHS, NSA or whatever !!! Thanks to the Pirate Party !!!
This is a very interesting idea- but like the posts say, the weakest link is where it can be attacked, like an air-ground link, or the link to the internet.
Would this work ? - use a distributed network of servers, of course, on ground, water, air, etc, and then connect them in a group, or each one separately, to the internet with a distributed interface, of cell phones? that cant be defeated since they cant be localized... Maybe move them around (tape to the roofs of public transportation temporarily?) to avoid triangulation, ... use cell phones that you buy for cash at the supermarket... but they don't have high data speeds ? I am NOT an expert at anything LOOOOL.
TACK ! TPB, YOU ROCK !!! Danke, Merci !

As I understand it, you can build a cubesat and get it launched for around $50k. I imagine quite a few people would sponsor a kickstarter project to build, e.g. a 20 cubesat mesh network for $1M. It's less than games have been raising.

The king and his men
stole the queen from her bed
and bound her in her Bones.
The seas be ours
and by the powers
where we will well roam.

Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
never say we die.

Some men have died
and some are alive
and others sail on the sea
– with the keys to the cage...
and the Devil to pay
we lay to Fiddler's Green!

The bell has been raised
from it's watery grave...
Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?
We are a call to all,
pay head the squall
and turn your sail toward home!

Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
never say we die.

The reality is that TPB won't be able to do it as it is a non starter as many have pointed out.
I think its just a publicity ploy on TPB's part and not something thats actually going to happen, as, they would need Air Traffic Control slots to fly these so-called drones, and they won't get them!
I like what TPB does, but its getting a little bit like the useless attempts of comedy that US network tv shits out, its not funny or worth the time and you can get better somewhere else in a fashion that YOU want.
#75. Mephisto80 - 03-20 2012
The Pirate Bay is really an amazing site. Even if you won't make it, you'll remain in history as P2P genius. Congratulations for thinking so big! When I first read this, I thought this is impossible (=joke). It would be something extraordinary to manage to do this. Good luck!

Lol, piratiinho :) I'm a girl from Venus, by the way ;-)

So that must be why TPB has changed its slogan from "The world's most resilient BT site" to "The GALAXY's most resilient BT site." As they used to say in the anti-establishment sixties, "Far out, dudes." :-)

Question: are Peter, Fredrik and Gottfrid really going to prison? That breaks my heart and makes me mad! :-( I think there needs to be something done about this big time. An Occupy Stockholm of sorts, because these guys are NOT criminals in any way; they're political prisoners! Whoever the Swedish meatballs are that sent them to the big house should be sectioned and have to walk the pirate plank themselves!

Sad that these heroes will be sent to one type of "gated community" by the corrupt types who live in that other kind of gated community. :-(
#81. ejonesss - 03-20 2012
i see a problem.

another september 11 and they will be taken down only because of that no plane can fly during a no fly time.

you may want to try putting the servers out in the ocean say on some island like sealand or even buy out a retired cruise ship and do everything by satellite so the only way to shut down the site is if it served up child porn or other snuff content
#82. aknova-47 - 03-20 2012
A reliable source told me that the drone collects dew and rain from the atmosphere and a solar-powered electrolysis inflate its balloon with hydrogen. Batteries make it work at night and at sunlight the batteries are recharged. Its defenses include a low-cost EM-rootkit and jammer against missiles.

Nice idea, hope it will be functional, but first thing I thought: can government block radio signals? even if you make pirate radio station on the ground, gov can block your signal. Milosevic in Serbia blocked signals of some radio stations which fought against him, I think it was military truck with some big dish/antena and they come and block signal.

Most likely on the same principal as flying windmill farms, where an amount of energy is required to get the windmill into the air and then when it's up there it'll power it's motors itself through the electricity provided by the air
