The Pirate Bay - The galaxy's most resilient bittorrent site

Just some stats...

Just some stats... ... here are some reasons why TPB is down sometimes - and how long it usually takes to fix: Tiamo gets *very* drunk and then something crashes: 4 days
Anakata gets a really bad cold and noone is around: 7 days
The US and Swedish gov. forces the police to steal our servers: 3 days
.. yawn.

Haha, ja må si dem har klart og drite seg ut bra når dem tok serverene deres:P Kan jo hende dette blir begynnelsen på en gjennsidig strid mellom "loven" og folket;-) Lykke til..

Getting drunk or catching a cold.. fully understandable and correct. US & Swedish gov´s desperate failure, irritating..

Just a thought... can´t we all collect enough money to put the complete idiot H Pontén in orbit or the far side of the moon. I realize that it probably would cost a lot to rent space in the shuttle, but WTF a very big pile of firecrackers will work... And if anyone have second thoughts and argues that the empty void of space would kill him.... No way, he has prooved to us all that there is a empty void in his head already. And if there´s no difference in pressure he´ll be just fine... He can get a (konsumkasse) filled with air to breath...

Let us all hope this complete jaw-breaking blow to the face of the american government will mean an escalation of the internet/copyright dispute, and that the Swedish (and Scandinavian, for that matter) will understand which side they should stand on. Seems our corner of the world will be where the last stand of online freedom will be fought. Kick ass on your side of the border, brothers. We'll try to do our part on this side.
-Cheers, Norway.

Pirats are not just plain evil copyright violators but also very creative guys:

In a joined Austrian-German operation this night on the Piratchannel irc://irc.efnet.net/thepiratebay.org they made fun over the MPAA!

They took "the original":
http://www.mpaa.org/screen4.swf

and created the "piratversion"

Way to Go!
hahahah!!!
"IN YOUR FACE MPAA!"

just wanted to suggest iNDiA, the country of mysteries as one of the possible location where TPB can rest in peace and serve the masses for a VERY long uninterupted time; as the Govt. and even the police is severly corrupted.... you can buy your way out of anything here...
and with lack of strict IT laws and NO recognition for the bittorrent protocol or internet ditribution of material by the Govt/Law.. india qualifies to be one of the BEST location!

Welcome back TPB. Make sure you get Compensation. And lets have a formal (legal threat letter type of) response to that MPAA press release. I so want to say alotof things to that, not to mention slap the freaking moron that wrote it.
btw, i've been to India, the electrical infrastructure there is terrible, never mind interweb connetivity :S

Please reply to the MPAA statement :D
#51. jerbe - 06-05 2006
Sitric: To me it looks like the REAL problem is that the Govt and even the police was corrupted in Sweden as well, and obviously could be bought.
The problem is that the other side has all the money...

the u.s. has been ramming their movies-t.v. and way of life to the whole planet for far to long.world control is their game---if your not on our side your against us-- attitude just dosn't fly with the rest of the world. The u.s. has laws against unlawfull entry into computers--seems they only use that law in the u.s.---much like the way they hold prisoners of war in secret locations where u.s.law has no creedence and they can do what ever they like. This is our time now--its our duty to share data that in most cases allready had the tax paided on the product.these bullyboys who make their money from laying their legal bull shit on the whole planet--they should say in their own country and worry about the u.s. and not the planet--the more these dudes try the more places will be found opposition--just like george bush is finding out-- the hard way.

over 1 million members and lots more users--- what about a boycott of t.v. and movies that are u.s.made--works for me!

#56. QllQ - 06-05 2006
My god, get a reality check, laws in this area is about the same in most developed countries.

The raid agaisnt TPB had nothing to do with any preassure from the US, we have just about the same copyright laws here as in the US.

Exactly why they decided to do it last week we will probably never know but it had to happen eventually and it will probably happen again.

Like I said, get a reality check, this is illegal, I'm using it but I have no illusions about what I'm doing, of course it's illegal to download movies, music and software and using it without paying for it, don't fool yourselfs.

I have nothing against piracy, for the simple reason that I feel the prices are way to high for movies and software but like I said, I have no illusions about what I'm doing and neither should anyone else that downloads pirated movies, music and software.
#57. QllQ - 06-05 2006
Why do you all think it's named the PIRATE bay ? Do you know what pirates are ?

Does the name indicate these guys really think this is legal ? I dont think so.

Like I said, keep downloading but don't fool yourselfs.
#58. Dirty42 - 06-05 2006
thank the flying spaghetti monster that sweden isn't suspected of having weapons of mass destruction or the yanks wouldn't even have bothered to ask your government. :)

keep going, harr!
#59. guf22 - 06-05 2006
Yes it is illegal to download copyrighted movies... but tht is not the case here.
Sharing torrentfiles is not illegal in sweden, whatever the torrentfiles contain is not copyrighted. So closing the site was a mistake from the goverment and police.
So stop saying the site is illegal. Its not. It is you that downloads a torrent with info to get the copyrighted material that is doing something illegal. Not the site.

Welcome Back TPB. Wish the law was like yours. (in some places) ;) Greetings from DK

guf22:
I guess that's what we will find out once and for all, it could be argued that putting up a tracker is aiding to commit a crime and that is what they stand accused for.

I do think they have a case since it's obvious that they havent tried to filter out coyrighted material for three years or even put up a note that it is illegal.

I don't think you can get away anymore by claiming a torrent doesnt contain copyrighted material when they put up the worlds largest tracker to keep track of downloads of copyrighted material.

If that is not aiding I don't know what is but we'll find out soon enough.

If it was just the site with links to torrents, no tracker, it would have been a different thing.

#66. CursedGroin - 06-05 2006
However, for every case they are supposed to get convicted for accessory to, there has to be a conviction for the infringement, too! So, first they have to convict someone who uploaded/downloaded some torrent, and then they could TRY to convict TPB for accessory to it.

#74. foxtail313 - 06-05 2006
what i dont really get"or maybe im so Fucking stupid" is why the fuck did they do this "in other words." what i do know is the piratebay is just showing the torrents they are not the ones that are uploading. but still the piratebay has alot of problems with the U.S. :)

"I guess that's what we will find out once and for all, it could be argued that putting up a tracker is aiding to commit a crime and that is what they stand accused for."

so going down that line of thought....
if someone asks you where the nearest bank is and you tell them, then they go in and rob the bank, you should be arrested and charged as an accomplice?

or if you sell someone a car & they go out & run someone down, does that make you an accessory to a murder?

sorry, but that 'torrents are illegal' argument is just another big pile of steaming horseshit. torrents are nothing more than markers, and the site is a dedicated search engine for these markers.

chavkiller:

Yeah, thats really the same thing isn't it.

Amazing.
#78. QllQ - 06-05 2006
chavkiller :

Again, it is THE TRACKER that is illegal, not the torrent file.

This site contains a website and a TRACKER ! The TRACKER is certainly involved in spreading copyrighted content.
#79. Power2All - 06-05 2006
May I hint you, that the tracker only shares information and not copyrighted content ?
It's bullshit if you give the tracker the fault of the problem.
The programs that download the files is actually illegal, but then again, it won't function without torrents, and without a tracker, the torrent is useless.
The tracker doesn't spread the content, it only gives info about the IP's of users and so on, no big deal.

#91. tek76 - 06-05 2006
You guys are my heros. Finally someone is fighting back!

Wrt. torrents/trackers being legal or not. I keep pondering on the US view on firearms. They are perfectly legal in the us, but most of the firearms can only be used for killing humans (they are useless for hunting), however the weapon industry is NOT responsible for the killings. Following these (american) lines I see NO reason why a torrent/tracker should be illegal. It is the USER that may be committing a crime, not the tracker/torrent itself.

What is going on?,
can't load any torrents.
404 errors

#113. derelk - 06-05 2006
There´s a lot of complaining of 404 errors and "why cant I download any torrents"

Well instead of wining like spoiled children, you might want to try to reload the page, perhaps even try again..

Some links works at once, some don´t work at all.. some just needs.....

My point is that the server is working at reduced capacity thanks to H Pontén & Co, and until full capacity is restored we all have to be a bit patient. It´s not like you payed for this service...
If I remember correctly I believe that TPB lost 14-16 machines in the raid. And now have 8 machines in the Netherlands or where ever. I read about in swedich papers.

But have faith...In TPB.. I think that the probs will be solved.
Please correct me if I´m wrong..

In the 1950'ies they had plans to make their own atomic bombs. Rumors say there are some hidden in underground caverns and stuff. Wouldn't that qualify for an invasion?
I've seen that rumor on at least two pages on the internet, surely that's proof enough.
Now, just wait, soon we will be annexed by the US and become the 255th state of America.

Isnt it nice the land of the free fools.. A land that can supress all others just by using their stupid "well-kill-all-that-dont-think-as-we" tactics.. Fools. There is no stopping DL. Even my 78 year old granny uses downloads. Music, movs and knitting patterns.. When everyone is a criminal the law must be wrong right?? Show them a new era is coming in the internet age. Preserv the web as a haven of the free mind. Stand up in court guys and i will hail you.

I hope we all who like to download copyright stuff here on TPB and on other sites, help both the staff on TPB and others that got busted. Help them to pay penalty. Give money to a pirate-fund, or to the one Piratbyran already have. But I think we need a big international fund.W e are so many around. And we are much stronger than any government. So by helping each other we are untouchable.

This is no criticism of their party but definitely IS a criticism of this greedy gimme-gimme-gimme cheering section. TPB hasn't "won" a thing. They ran. Tails tucked firmly between their legs. Right out of the country. There is of yet no resolution to the anti-copyright facade.

It -IS- all about money, isn't it?

I can't stand the "We're the best damn country because we have freedom and democracy" bull anymore. Thinkin' about moving to Scotland (where my ancestors are from) or some other place in Northern Europe. :)"

1. America is not a democracy. Never has been. Was never intended to be.
2. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Since you're still in school, and obviously don't know your ass from Yankee Stadium, might I suggest you educate yourself on the origins of the USA, the limited powers of government, inalienable rights (that is, they are not granted by government, but exist by virtue of the fact that you are breathing), and ways in which you can fight against the federal tyranny instead of cutting and running, like a fucking pussy.

"the u.s. has been ramming their movies-t.v. and way of life to the whole planet for far to long."

It's rammed because you non-Americans eat the shit up. American companies are successful because they market to people who eagerly pay for it. It's simple. You don't buy it, we leave.

"world control is their game"
Yeah, that's it. Beat them in to submission with the Big Mac. Quite the conspiracy.

If you attack our cities, we will bomb you into oblivion with B-52s. Sounds like self defense to me.

"attitude just dosn't fly with the rest of the world."

As though we give a fuck. Doesn't mean much coming from contries incapable or unwilling to defend themselves.

"The u.s. has laws against unlawfull entry into computers--"

As an American, that's news to me. With the income tax laws, and most recently the "Patriot Act", seems to me any protection of Amendment IV is lost. (The right of the people to be secure in their persons, h

About the "404 not found" problem; could it be that people still use the old tracker adress when seeding?
#154. eek111 - 06-07 2006
"Wrt. torrents/trackers being legal or not. I keep pondering on the US view on firearms. They are perfectly legal in the us, but most of the firearms can only be used for killing humans (they are useless for hunting),"

That's correct. Killing humans is the purpose of firearms (duh). The whole idea that firearms are for hunting, is bullshit. The hunting lobby has done a great disservice to the "right to bear arms". The right to bear arms is not protected for hunting purposes. The right to bear arms exists for the sole purpose of protecting oneself against government. That's it. This was the sole intent of the "right to bear arms". Thus, restrictions that exist, such as registration, and banning the use of armor piercing bullets (the government would be the only ones with body armor) are infringements of your rights. Failure to recognize this distinction is foolish.

"however the weapon industry is NOT responsible for the killings. "

Why should they be? If you flip your car on a highway, is

Is there someone who truly thinks that the U.S is a democracy?? Look it up in a dictionary.

great site as always!

just wanted to note again that many torrents here link to legal material too... in the case of torrents linking to illegal content on users computers it was the users choice... and one other important aspect of the torrent system is that the SAME torrent linking to the so called illegal material contains "crc" checks, and in fact could be used for MUCH more than the content it claims for... a single torrent file could be valid for perhaps a 1000000000^10 different files, so its not a valid argument that a particular torrent file have to be associated to piracy

Greetings from Finland, where the copyright law was reneved earlier this year, making all this stuff quite illegal...

A big lol for the MPAA for failing terribly... I am sorry, really. And I mean it. Update your webiste, when it says that Pirate Bay is down and it isn't, you make yourself seem riddiculous.

Congratulations and HHUUGGEE thanks on TPB staff for getting the site up. You are absolute lovely, I admire your courage. I would marry you all :) "and to rise from the dead the third day"

Greetings to the swedish police, who for sure is checking this site. Hope this turns out well, for all of us. Filesharing is caring - we know you love it too, and that you where only doing your job. :(

This can't really be easy for the TPB staff. Actually, must be like hell. Being unsure how it will end. You are under the scope now, so play it as smoothly as you can. I know you will prevail. I'll bail you out if you need me to. That is a promise.

Switzerland seems a lot more like the "land of the free" than America.

Thanks for fighting the good fight against the global march of corporate rule.

By the way, you should get more of the letters in your 'legal threats' section back up, most of them are 404 now, and they're such good entertainment. I cant believe microsoft is crying about you hosting windows. Bill gates is already richer than everybody else on the earth combined.

Tiago_Machado - Today 00:16: "Anywone nows why most of torrents are unavailable? sorry my english but i am portuguese..." Never apologize. Never! There is not one damned thing wrong with your English.
Most torrents are unavailable because they only resurrected a portion of their database files. The plus in all this is a refreshing lack of "404" errors from running way too many references than the system could handle. Another plus is those references that do click are more likely to be NOT dead. TPB is the world's largest tracker of dead torrents.
#194. armoredcore9870 - 06-09 2006
great job you guys... I don;t think any other group of torrent hosters is as resilient as you, and noone else has as much media attention as you either. My thanks for providing a great service to all of those (including me) that cannot afford to be robbed by the software companies with the unbelievable costs of purchasing software legally. I and, I am sure, every other person between the ages of 13 and 27 thank you profusely.

On another note, the site seems to be lacking a lot of torrent files that were there previously... Is this because the servers with those files were jacked by the police? Or is it just that you haven't yet put them on? Either way, I'll be able to wait, but just the same I'd really like it if I could get some of those torrents soon.

Thank you,
Sir Tristan C.

"Anyone notice in the last few days that alot of torrents have vanished?"

"Yupp, all of my torrents have been deleted for some reason. Does anyone know if these "vanished" torrents will be back, or do we have to upload them all over again?"

There are atleast 2 possible reasons for this (imho, and just guessing).

I'd go for server power and capacity being too low for all the torrents, and therefore some where removed, temporarily, to keep the system running properly.

The other one is that they lost some files while they needed to rebuild from backups, and didn't have the nessessary stuff to keep those torrents available, since it just caused a 404 to try and reach a file that wasn't there, or, was falsely addressed to.
#214. Linendail - 06-10 2006
I just realized all of you didn't know, since you just asked it yesterday, but the captured staff members were released pretty soon after they were captured. You can't hold someone captive if you can't bring together enough evidence to prosecute them. And in this case, sure there are not enough evidence.

The fact that the MPAA can force the US Government to pressure the Sweedish government into taking totally illegal action against you is absurd. As you well know and the moronic authorities need to learn, torrents are not in any violation whatsoever of any copyright laws, even according to the infinitely perverse US laws.

It's about time that the US stops trying to be the world police organization. The FBI warning on films is absurd. The FBI couldn't possibly care less about copyrights. They proved that to me when they refused to take action against a company who stole a book I published and tried to claim its copyrights for themselves.

Way-to go !!

Oh!
Don't we all just wait for an update in "Legal threats" now... LOL
#219. jaybee276 - 06-11 2006
There are sadly many many torrents that are now stuck due to no one seeding. The number is growing rapidly. Many of the torrents that are stuck are shown in the top 100 listings. Please Please could they be identified and eliminated from your listings. If this is not done this whole thing is in danger of grinding to a standstill.

In the end we still may have to try for more reasonable solutions for copywright management; at least for the older
stuff. How hot is Any stuff older than, lets say, 5 years anyway. I, myself could accept some system based on current attractiveness on the worldwide market divided by total amount of, say, Bittorrent users total, or separated by preferred language or any other reasonable equivalent.
But if we look at current attitudes from Them, this may still be only a dream. The only way I can see that anything like that will come to be implemented is by a Really powerful international treaty, so don't hold your breath waiting!
But it could come down to very, very cheap prices in the end..
BUT, as of now, their greatest source revenue of seems to be suing US instead! I dont think we can get it all for free forever, but groups like EFF and us Pirates may still force them to rethink their current policy. Or we might have some kind of police state instead, at least Rightwise.
They are scared of us! All th

Sigh.. What a stupid move by the Swedish government to once again kiss the US' ass (I'm talking about after the big CIA scandal when the Swedish authorities deliberately helped kidnap and deport two "terrorists" from Bromma Airport in Stockholm to Egypt, knowing that they would be tortured and beaten which also turned out to be true. And they were innocent, which also is a fact).

I'm absolutely not surprised to see the law enforcement authorities losing the "battle", which they started by unlawful means. Now, let them sink in the quick sand they created for themselves. After all, government officials are also liable to prosecution as anyone else is.

Well, it has once again been proven that bullying and threatening "ThePirateBay" (or any other lawful Web site) isn't effective regardless of all the progapanda methods that these greedy entertainment businesses are constantly using to push for their dirty agenda. Also, after doing such a stupid thing that they did, they should have learned a les

I (quite sadly) reside in america. I just wanted to offer my support for the site along with the support of my fellow american bit torrent users. There will ALWAYS be a place on the web for sites such as yours. Good luck for years to come :)

Long live the USA.

But down with the MPAA, that's what you're missing.
#250. teverz - 01-06 2007
I thank God I live in Canada. Our Government told MPAA exactly where to go and they hate us for it.

For those that live in the US ... I feel for ya ... NOT .... you voted for the people that allowed agencies like MPAA to get so much control over your lives.

//thank God I live in Canada. Our Government told MPAA exactly where to go and they hate us for it.

I wouldnt be so sure about that, there have been lots of articles in the news the last couple of weeks about Canada changing their copyright rules to be similar to US ones. Not that I agree they should, because I think the US suck. Just letting you know you guys arent in the clear.

//For those that live in the US ... I feel for ya ... NOT .... you voted for the people that allowed agencies like MPAA to get so much control over your lives.

This comment is just dumb.
#252. karnoo - 01-13 2007

Was reading this extremely long series of rants...
Funny ass shit. But really, I was thinking, if The USA
is so hellbent on forcing their "superior culture" on the
the rest of the world, Then they honestly should be funding
TPB instead of fighting it. TPB is (if someone cared to check
it) demonstrably better at spreading any given file than any possible commercial system. Why? Because we're sorry GW, but the "average family group" does NOT make 100k a year. Not in the US, and probably not anywhere else either.
TPB (I'm lovin' it!)
#258. RedMage8BT - 01-29 2007
I like this site, but I really hope something sues you. You frustrate me with your cockyness. If I were the head of a company, I know I'd do everything in my power to make sure you get punished, civilly or criminally.

i love this thread its totally insane, the fact that it has been running for AAAAAAAAAGES says a lot about the human race. we wont be trodden on by man nor beast. so try stealing our access well just get it elsewhere :)

Love the site especially the legal threats segment (need new ones though!)

Keep up the great job, just be careful..

latest rumour out of the USA is that Sweden may have weapons of mass distruction.

Thanks for sending Matts Sundin and Peter Forsberg to play hockey with us!
#261. Go_Cat75 - 02-07 2007
The real criminals here are the groups of people who sell copyrighted material illegally for profit.

The "File Shares" are doing the authorities a favor and should be praised not punished by reducing the number of profit makers there are selling "illegal copies" of material by using torrent sharing to get it for free and stamping out the real Illegals out there.

Before the US of A & A (United States of America and Australia) try and "Fix" other countries problems, they should look in there own back yard first for a long time to come.

This is the 1st post, of a long time user.

#263. DarkCheiftain - 02-09 2007
I can't resist...

All these "Americans" talking about how piracy is bad, and taking stuff for free that you should pay for....are a joke.

I'm Cherokee, so by that rationale, the U.S. would owe me, and my people, a heckuva lot of money. hmmm, actually, they'd be broke if they paid what they owed to all Native American tribes they stole land from.

Maybe that's the secret of why they harrass you at TPB.....guilty conscience? We may never know.

HA, I say, HA HA!

Ballsy fucks they are, saying they're loosing money. I wouldn't pay to see most of those films in the theatre, and I won't waste the disk space on most of them either! That goes for their music too!

Hell, I've bought books and the occassional CD based on my having downloaded something and liked it.

So if anything, I've made them money, because I sure as hell wouldn't give them a goddamn dime otherwise.

Barearav Anakata!
